                                  HOW DO YOU CHECK YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID?

                                  Always refer to your owner's manual to learn whether or not your car should be running when you check your transmission fluid.

                                  Open the hood and find the transmission fluid dipstick (make sure not to confuse it with your motor oil dipstick). Wipe it with a clean rag, and check your fluid level.

                                  If your fluid is coming up to the full line, just replace the dipstick and shut the hood.

                                  If you are running low on transmission fluid in Willards, Pittsville or Vienna, pour in more until it comes up to the fill line. If your fluid is low and you believe that you have a leak, give us a call at (410) 709-3239 so we can take a look at possible problems and take care of them before they become more expensive.

                                      What Does a Car's Transmission Do?

                                      Not everyone is a car professional, and luckily, to drive a car you don't really have to know how all of the internal systems work. So it is normal if you don't actually know what your transmission is, or what it does.

                                      In reality, your transmission is simply a gear shifter so your car can always be in the best gear at every speed. 

                                      Transmissions are designed to sense when you speed up and shift into a higher gear. When you slow down, they shift to a lower gear so your car always has the proper gear ratio to drive at its best. You can think of this as being like shifting gears while riding a bike.

                                      Instead of manually shifting gears with a clutch and stick shift, an automatic transmission shifts gears for you. (In the United States, only around 4% of cars have manual transmissions, so the overwhelming majority of cars have automatic transmissions.)

                                        When Should You Change Your Transmission Fluid?

                                        Transmission fluid keeps your transmission lubricated and keeps it from burning too hot and eventually failing. That is why it is best practices to keep your fluid at the proper level. Some automakers encourage changing your transmission fluid every 30,000 miles; others tell you to wait until 100,000 miles. Refer to the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. You will need to check your fluid level regularly to make sure it stays full and protects your transmission. You can do this yourself or by visiting us at i.g. Burton Chevrolet of Berlin for a quick fluid check.
